Ten Things of Thankful: Mini Road Trip Edition

An empty road passes between two rocky hills
Tuesday through Thursday this past week, John and I took youngest daughter on a short getaway. She hadn't been on a vacation for a while, and it was nice to spend some time together. We drove down to southern Utah and spend a few days exploring the area. We visited Cove Fort and Silver Reef, hiked a short trail at Pioneer Park, and viewed petroglyphs in Parowan. We watched a movie (Wicked), enjoyed the hot tub at the VRBO house, and played board games. It was a relaxing, enjoyable time.

Friday, Drexel had his yearly appointment with the vet. Drexel's heavy Labrador retriever tail thump-thump-thumped the whole time. He loves going everywhere!

Yesterday it snowed off and on (mostly on) all day long. I was able to give a ride to the grocery store to a friend whose car wasn't up to the snowy roads.

Yesterday evening and this morning, John and I attended stake conference. (Stakes are comprised of several wards. Wards are local church congregations.) The messages were based around the scripture: "And we talk of Christ, we rejoice in Christ, we preach of Christ, we prophesy of Christ, and we write according to our prophecies, that our children may know to what source they may look for a remission of their sins." (2 Nephi 25:26 from the Book of Mormon) Speakers and musical numbers contributed to the theme. One young woman shared a trying experience she had, and added, "If you have time to worry, you have time to pray."

This week, I'm thankful:

1. For time spent with youngest daughter.

2. For an excellent docent at the Silver Reef Museum. He brought the ghost town to life.

A square stone building (which is the Silver Reef Museum) stands in the desert ghost town of Silver Reef

3. For evidence of those who came before.

4. For Drexel. After a week of taking a joint supplement (and not accompanying me on my walks), he is acting chipper again. The vet said Drexel's hips seem fine, although his knees are a little stiff, but not unexpectedly so, given his age.

5. For a car that can drive in the snow.

6. For reaching out to a friend. Have you ever had a thought to reach out to someone who you haven't talked to in a while, or to do something that doesn't really make sense, but when you do it, you find out it was important? That was my experience this week, and it made me feel good that I acted upon that thought.

7. For amaryllis bulbs. In the fall of 2022, I bought some wax-covered amaryllis bulbs from Costco. After they finished blooming, I took the wax off and planted the bulbs in a container. Since then, every fall I put the container in the dark cold basement and then bring them upstairs again in the winter. Every year, they have rebloomed. It appears that they are preparing to bloom again this year.

Green leaves are growing up from three amaryllis bulbs

8. For hymns. While singing in church today, I was surrounded by people singing various parts. It was nice to hear the different voices all adding to the complete sound.

9. For messages of peace and hope. Jesus really is the answer.

10. For John. I think I'm enjoying his retirement as much as he is.

    1. Even with the snow and cold, I think you're right: spring is on its way.

Monday Mentions: Equate Crutches

Have you ever needed crutches? I hadn't, until a week ago.  I'm pretty sure I strained a muscle while running a half-marathon.  (That sounds kind of cool, doesn't it? I'm not actually that cool; the last time I strained a muscle it was from carrying too many shopping bags at once.) In any case, I found myself in need of some crutches. I sent my husband to the store to get some. Photo: A pair of crutches leans against a wall  Not that crutches are all that complex, but because I hadn't used any before, I wondered if I could figure out how to adjust them to fit me properly. I shouldn't have worried. John came home from Walmart with their generic store brand of crutches, complete with instructions. First, I needed to take out a long bolt that went through the hand grip. Then I needed to find my height range, push down two metal pieces, and slide the crutches until the little metal pieces came up in the hole near my height range. (Having two people for this...

Ten Things of Thankful: Live from Oregon, part 2

stock photo of old computer monitor When I was 10 or 11, I remember sitting next to my dad in our living room and reading computer code to him as he entered it into an Apple computer. We would finish the exercise and he would hit enter (or was it "run"?) and wait expectantly for the green type to appear on the screen. If we were lucky, the whole conversation would occur. Most often, there would be an error either in my dictation of the code, or in the typing of the code. We would then go painstakingly back through the lines, character by character, to find and correct the error. After what seemed like hours (and might have been), we would succeed and the computer would finally run the entire program. It was magical! My dad designed and built an earth-sheltered, passive solar home decades before solar panels were commonplace. He also was on a 9-month waiting list for a Prius, when hybrids were not seen on every street.  While my dad is definitely on the cutting edge of technol...

Ten Things of Thankful: Oregon Edition, Part 3

A western bluebird, sitting at the base of a house window, looks inside Thanks (1) to those who have sent well-wishes for my mom's recovery. Her wrist is healing up nicely. I met a friend from high school for lunch this past week. It was so nice to have a chance to visit with her for a couple of hours. She is one of those friends who it doesn't matter how much time has passed, we can pick right back up into meaningful conversations. Lunch ended all too soon, but I'm so thankful (2) for her, and I'm thankful (3) that she reminded me of the importance of reaching out to others.  Being in my parents' home this week, visiting with a long-time (I'm not saying old!) friend, and with Mother's Day tomorrow, my mind naturally reflects upon the women in my life. I'm thankful (4) for an incredible mom--a gentle woman who taught and loved and guided us (and still does.) I'm thankful (5) for grandmas who were different in their personalities but united in their...
